Actually, The Bible isn't very clear on the age of the Earth. Most scholars agree that prior to references to Abraham, the chronology is likely not literal and that the Earth may indeed be millions (or billions) of years old and still not necessarily contradict Genesis. The literal interpretation is used by two groups:
1) Some believers who rely on a literal interpretation to support a certain dogma.
2) Those who are trying to refute certain religions.
In any case, this may very well mean that the ark (not arc) may have occurred many thousands or even millions of years ago. Perhaps not as far back as dinosaurs, but then again, there are questions of how valid the dates for dinosaurs are as well. There are many, many explanations for all of the well known and discussed theories regarding the ark. The bottom line, however is that the whole argument really doesn't matter much to religions based on The Bible.
