I think it's fine. If you buy something at a store it's not only your "property" it's also in the store's records. The store's records have always been open if you asked them. The library is a government building and their records are usually public if you ask.

The internet isn't anyone's. I cannot claim what I am typing right now. If the Feds want to see it they sure as hell should and I'll let them. The internet isn't your bedroom. Whether you put locks on it, or passwords, or encryption. It still doesn't change the fact that the information is open to the world; even if it takes more work to get it.

If you don't want them to see what books you take out or read your email then don't use the library or email. You can get along without them anyways.

it seems that the only reason to be afraid of them knowing what you do is if you have something to hide....I don't

But yeah it is in violation of the 1st amendment.

adrian is right in the sense that people say "if its for safety, then okay." too many people all over where i live have been saying that about these type of decisions.

what a person reads or buys has nothing to do with anything that should be able to get them in jail, and the government has no right to look over the records unless the person has been buying things like M80's every day.

reading what you do on the computer is another thing. they are technically allowed to do it, but they cant hold you against it because it goes against everything that the USA stands for.

its all stupid if you ask me. our government is turning into a very long, drawnout, and unhumorous joke that someone like your dad would make for a small laugh.
