Ageia physx (as the name suggests) is a PPU( physics processing unit) which is aimed to handle the calculations of physics like collision detection, body dynamics etc...

It does the same thing that the GPU does for games, but instead of adding graphical processing power it crunches physics code and removes the load that calculating physics puts on the processor.

As people have said, it handles physics calculations which would normally be done by the processor allowing the processor to be used for other things (better performance, graphics, etc.). The problem is that it requires specific support from the game developers who are unwilling to make to write code that requires it because it would decrease their potential market, this means it is of limited use in most games.
