Default control problem: keyboard or system?

Hi folks, am new to this site but was hoping for some desperate help...

Ive been an avid gamer for as long as games and the pc has been invented, first person shooters all the way baby!

The problem i am having is this: I was 80% of the way through Quake 4 when one day i paused it to make an all important cup of tea, and a micro-break for my poor, bleeding eyes. When i can back and started playing as normal i go forwards and it wont stop going forwards. I sidestep to avod a bloody death and it wont stop going sideways... i press fire at an advancing demon and it responds 30 seconds later as im still walking blindy into a wall because it wont respond. I uninstall and re-install, still the same deal. I try Battlefield 1942 with the same problem, hold W down to go forwards and it wont stop going! I install Aliens Vs Predator 2 for a slice of online action and get the same thing happening.

I know my system is quite capable of running AvP and 1942, it flagged a bit under the pressure of Quake 4 but on minimum settings it was definately playable.

I'm running on a Socket A and FSB400/DDR400 Motherboard with a 2GB Athalon Processor, a GeForce FX 5200 graphics card and 640mb of DDR Ram.

What have i done wrong? I've run Checkit Diagnostics on everything and its come up trumps, Is it my keyboard? Sticky keys is definately off...

Im stumped as to the problem folks, any suggestions?

Please help this solitaire shooter lover!!

hugs and kisses
