It's been in the news for months about the lost jobs, closed plants for both GM & Ford.

Shareholders want the blood of GM CEO Rick Wagoner, with market capitalisation of GM dropping from 66 to just 15 billion.

So is GM and Ford on the way out, or to paraphrase Mark Twain has news of their death been greatly exaggerated? With IBM selling out their PC side to a Chinese company, and another Chinese company bidding for Unocal 76, can US industry recover?

They will not go under.
The problem with them is they do mass production and when a slump in sales comes along, they end up letting go of employees etc. Then if all the mass produced cars and trucks do not sell, they end up having to liquidate them at a great loss to the company.
They should take a look at the way Honda runs their companies. They only produce cars as they are purchased. Honda has never had a lay-off in the history of their company. They still manage to be competitive in the job market and in the sales market.
Ford and GM go through theses financial problems every so often....maybe they should start running things a different way, because the way they are doing it now has proven over and over to be unsucessfull!

I own a GM GMC Jimmy now (Chevrolet Blazer) ..... GM will never go away if they do think about all the other car brands currently under the General Motors name.

Just so you know, I don't say this because I do not like the company....I currently own a Ford truck and a Honda Accord. So I do enjoy the vehicles both companies make. My husband actually works for Honda Canada Mfg, that is why I know about the Honda company. They do not have a Union...they never have had a layoff, they do not mass produce, they treat their employee's awesome, pay them a starting wage of $23.00 an hour and manage to create a great vehicle at competitive prices.
