Default Xbox 360 controller for Windows XP - major configuration problems!

Hello,

I just picked up the Xbox 360 controller for Windows XP today, and I am
having some major issues getting this thing working properly. Let me start
off describing things just prior to installing the controller:

I was using a Logitech Dual Action gamepad for all of my PC gaming. The
games I am currently playing consist of:

-Madden 06
-NHL 06
-NBA Live06
-MVP Baseball 2005
-Nascar Simracing
-Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
-Ultimate Spiderman

The Logitech controller worked fine for all of these games, but it just felt
like a piece of junk. So, when I heard that Microsoft came out with a new
one PC gamepad, I jumped on it.

Which leads me to the present:

I installed the controller with the bundled device driver, and now NONE of
these games work right. In NHL 06, for example, once my players gain control
of the puck they rapidly skate around in circles until an opposing player
strips them of the puck. There are nuances like this in each game that makes
them unplayable.

Also, you are unable to set the directional pad, or the trigger buttons to
do ANYTHING in all of these games. They are buttons, too! Why won't any
games recognize them!?! There must be something wrong here!

I checked in the control panel for a controller configuration, and all that
is there is a calibration utility... No way to re-map the buttons, which are
numbered in a different order than every other PC gamepad out there right
now. What this means is: The buttons that DO work in these games are not in
the same spot on the controller that they were intended to be on. To try to
better explain, the 4-front controller buttons on other gamepads are numbered
like so:

4
1 3
2

With the Xbox 360 controller for Windows XP the 4-front controller buttons
are numbered like this:

4
3 2
1

This means that three of the four face buttons are not where they are on
other controllers, and there is no way to re-map the button layout!

I searched for an updated driver, but seeing as how this thing just came out
today, I was unable to find anything newer.

I have been messing around with this for two hours, and I have found out
absolutely nothing. I appreciate any help that anyone can give me.

Thanks,

-Matt

Hi Matt,

I haven't had a chance to buy one of those controllers, so I'm not in
the best position to be able to help you, since I can't try to reproduce
the problem on my system to find out what's going on.

With that said, you could do yourself and everyone searching these
newsgroups a terrific favor by contacting Microsoft Product Support.
The phone number should be in your documentation otherwise visit:
www.microsoft.com/support and click on the Assisted Support link.

I have the controller as well and it's totally screwy. The games are
NOT recognizing many of the buttons and it's essentially USELESS for
current games. This may mean it will ONLY work with games going forward
or games that release patches to support it (Yeah right)

I reccomend NOT buying this UNTIL THEY RESPOND in some way to these
issues.

Ok, I have had a LITTLE bit of luck with this thing. Ultimate Spiderman and
Halo for the PC both work great with this new controller. All of the EA
Sports game, however, are not working right. You are unable to map many of
the buttons which essentially makes them useless. In NHL 06 whatever player
has the puck begins to spin in rapid circles, and there is nothing you can do
about it. It is not a callibration problem, because it works fine in other
games. I don't have that many PC games, and the ones that I do have are
mostly EA Sports titles. Hopefully EA will release a patch for their games
taht will let this thing work.

Has anyone had luck with any other games?
