Default Who/What Influenced You To Listen To The Music You Listen To Today?

Do you like the long thread title? I couldn't think of a way to phrase it any better.

Anyway, who and/or what influenced you to listen to the music you listen to today? Whether it be a friend a few years ago, your sibling's music, or something else. Let's keep this thread devoid of comments like "well all other music sucks." I'll delete posts like that.

As for me, I think it was because around 4 or 5 years ago or something like that, I drifted into a new group of friends who listened to classic rock and whatnot, and they influenced me. Before that I pretty much listened to anything. I have CDs of everything from Sha Na Na to Backstreet Boys to a few classical CDs, to even a Motown Legends CD. But since then it's been all Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Joe Satriani (not classic rock, I know), The Who, Cream, Boston, then more into AC/DC, Dokken, Guns N Roses, Velvet Revolver, Slash's Snakepit, Metallica, etc.

I would say my Mother was my influence. Growing up, our house was filled with everything from classical music such as Jonathon Livingston Segal, John Denver, Nana Miskouri, ABBA, Led Zepplin and Deep Purple. Just as you Diablo, I can truly say that I like almost all types of music. My own CD library is just as varied.

Giggley, you missed that I said that I listened to everything.

Now I'm an opinionated elitist, who thinks that anyone who doesn't listen to my music is a loser.

Not really, I just don't bother throwing away CDs. I don't have all that many, so it's not like I'm running out of room to put them.

Well, since my browser decided to restart for some reason after I typed this, I'll make it short.
1. 1998: Actual start. Michael Jackson, Backstreet Boys were my first CD. Spice Girls and got into Pop and some R&B.
2. 1998: First time I heard 2Pac. I thought it couldn't get worse, but a crush I had on the girl that played it to me, and seeing "Changes" on TV made me buy his Greatest Hits album. I slowly started getting into it, and thanks to friends, other rap artists and music.
2001: All about rap, pop and R&B. After getting a bootleg copy of Linkin Park's "Hybrid Theory" and not touching it for 2 months, I finally give it a listen. I was blown away. The change started here. Some Metallica didn't hurt either.
I slowly moved more and more away from pop, rap and r&b. Though I had a period where I completely didn't listen to it. I check out whatever I like today. The only Pop band I truly listen to is The Cardigans. As for rap and r&b I like whatever is good. But I hardly listen to them, and most new rap and r&b sucks imo.
It took me time to get into the heavier stuff like System of a Down, but eventually I did. It was kinda like, Linkin Park then Nirvana then Metallica then Coldplay then Radiohead then I just expanded the rock I listen to. When I say rock, I mean alot of things. I just say "rock" instead of having to say metal, alternative, rock, heavy....etc.
Some of the bands and artists I like and love(Alphabetically, from my iPod):
A Perfect Circle, Alanis Morissette, The Beatles, The Cardigans, Coldplay, some David Bowie, some Dru Hill, Foo Fighters, Franz Ferdinand, Gorillaz, Green Day, Jeff Buckley, a little Korn, Marilyn Manson, Metallica, Mindless Self Indulgence, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, NWA, Queen, Radiohead, Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rolling Stones, Sade, Staind, System of a Down, Tool, The White Stripes.
And I plan on getting to listen to alot more, just not enough time.

Okay my music history:

Dark Ages: Cassettes, I have lots.
|
Then CDs and what not, just a couple.
|
My first music on the computer, I downloaded using Napster. That is old school.
|
I used Audion for like, 3 years before...

A.iT (After iTunes):
iTunes got me really into music. Since then my library has grown from 112 songs to 3127. I love me tunes and really owe it to iTunes.

A nice list of all the bands that I have on my computer that I like and listen to: AC/DC, Aerosmith, Boston, Cream, Deep Purple, Dokken, Guns N Roses, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Satriani, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Pink Floyd, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Slash's Snakepit, Steve Miller Band, Velvet Revolver, The Velvet Underground, The Who.

I need more music, but I'm low on cash and I don't want to download CD after CD of music.

I've always been into music. When I was kid my parents were into pop & classic rock (B52's, micheal jackson, madonna, metallica, etc.) and the kids at school were into rap & R&B (ie. snoop, criss cross, bone, etc.). So that was my foundation. Then as a young teen I started delving into more hard rock, punk, & electronic music ( I.E. NIN, nirvana, sex pistols, prodigy, A.T.R, etc.) Then from there it got less & less mainsteam branching into underground genre's like Crust, Grindcore, Shoegazer, Trip-hop, Viking Black Metal, 80's goth, etc.

Nirvana is more of a grungy alt. punk, but they were a big influence, then Skinny Puppy was even more an influence so I would recommend them the most.

List of bands: Skinny puppy// nausea// misery// cock and ball torturers// amebix// laukaus// assuck// asschapel// AC// GG allin// Doom// Pig destroyer// disrupt// Venom// Bathory// cradle of filth// Atari Teenage riot// Coma// The Turbo AC Slaters// Anti-product// Aus rotten// caustic christ// christian death// rotting christ// antischism// GISM// Riistetyt// Dahmer// Fuck...
