360 Sales Figures In
A bit less than anticipated in some quarters it seems...
Quote:
The first data on the Xbox 360's North American launch have begun arriving, the first from an independent source - the ever reliable NPD Group. Apparently, some 325,902 Xbox 360 consoles had been shifted by the end of November, not quite as impressive as the record breaking original Xbox launch, but very healthy considering the delay and shortages impacting stock supplies of the new console across the globe. Apparently, 1.27 million games have been sold for the console to date, meaning that 3.9 games have been sold for every console, impressively. Of course, retail encouragement of bundling may explain this high figure, but it will prove a welcoming statistic for publishers, who will no doubt be relieved that sales haven't been too adversely impacted by unit availability.
The top selling game was Activision's Call of Duty 2, which was bought by an impressive 77% of new gamers, followed by Madden NFL and the Xbox 360 version of Need for Speed from EA. Microsoft's own Perfect Dark came in fourth. PDZ was actually Redmond's top selling 360 game at the UK launch, perhaps noting a UK biased towards Rare's effort - which hasn't quite set the world alight as Microsoft may have hoped.
Many US stores are still struggling to fulfil existing pre-orders for the console, with Christmas now just over a week away. Microsoft for their part are promising weekly stock replenishment at retailers, though shortages will no doubt continue to be prevalent into the new year. We'll keep you posted.
