Fight for next-generation gamers begins with splashy MTV unveiling

It's your move, Sony.
Microsoft has hit the start button on the next generation of video game technology and has the current console king squarely in its sights.
A splashy MTV unveiling Thursday night capped a steady carpet-bombing of rumors, leaks and sneak peeks of the Xbox 360 console, which will go on sale this year.
It's almost enough to make a gamer nostalgic for a simpler time five years ago when a rumpled Bill Gates pulled the curtain back on the original Xbox at a mere news conference.
On the show, Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood provided the first glimpse of Xbox 360 titles such as Perfect Dark Zero, Quake 4, Call of Duty 2 and NBA 2K6. Microsoft did not announce a specific release date or a price for the new system.
The company's massive marketing push for the Xbox 360 is aimed at displacing gaming console champ Sony.
Roughly 20 million Xboxes have been sold worldwide, compared with more than 80 million of Sony's PlayStation 2 systems. Nintendo ranks third in console sales.
While the original Xbox has a single 733-megahertz Intel Pentium III processor, an IBM PowerPC chip with three 3.2-gigahertz cores will fire the Xbox 360. That's more raw horsepower than in just about any PC.
Microsoft says it will usher in the high-definition era of gaming, with graphics displayed at the resolution that is the hallmark of high-end televisions.
"The big story is really the leap from standard-definition graphics to high-definition graphics," said David Hufford, Xbox product manager. "When gamers see the games coming this holiday, they're going to be stunned."
